In February 2012 the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport was established, merging the former Ministry of Education and Sport, Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology and the Ministry of Culture. In spring 2013 followed the reorganisation that resulted in the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport and the Ministry of Culture.

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology performs also tasks in the field of higher education, research and technology, and also co-ordinates work in the field of the information society. The Ministry’s basic areas of work in the field of international co-operation encompass bilateral and multilateral scientific and technological co-operation. The Ministry represents Slovenia and participates on its behalf in the work of the European Commission committees. It is actively involved in the 5th, 6th and 7th EU Framework Programmes. It also covers the activities of Slovenia in the R&D field of South Eastern Europe. Within the Ministry, the UNESCO Office performs tasks concerning Slovenia’s co-operation with UNESCO. The Metrology Institute of the Republic of Slovenia (MIRS) and Higher Education Office of the Republic of Slovenia are also a body within the Ministry.


Funding

In addition to its national and international stipend and scholarship programmes, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology also issues various annual public calls and competitions.

There is an annual public call for the admission of pupils and students to Slovene educational institutions and a call for undergraduate and graduate students for their admission at student residencies, a call for the education of unemployed persons and foreign language education for adults, a call for the assigning of native speaker English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian language assistants at elementary and secondary Slovene schools, a call for the execution of lifelong educational programmes, and so on. There is also an open competition call for the co-financing of periodicals, youth periodicals and scientific monographs and for innovative and development projects in the field of international co-operation networking, a call for evaluation researches in the field of training and education, and a competition for information centre support and science promotion. In the field of science there is a competition for periodicals support and for youth science programmes and a competition for support to facilitate participation at international conferences. The Ministry also offers support to young researchers (graduate assistants at faculties).

International co-operation in funding the science and technology sectors was first organised in 2002. For the period 2004–2005 bilateral contracts were signed between Slovenia and Macedonia, Hungary, France, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Austria, Croatia, Poland, Portugal, Japan, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Spain, Serbia and Montenegro, Luxembourg, Israel, South Korea, Iran, Bavaria, Flanders, Egypt, Estonia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, North Korea, the Russian Federation, Andorra, Bulgaria, the USA, Morocco, Iceland, Thailand, Cyprus, Malta and Ukraine.
