Cultural cooperation
Film
Slovenian cinematography is frequently represented at the MedFilm Festival, a Rome venue devoted to presentation of the Mediterranean cinema. In 2012 the Embassy in Rome and Slovene Film Fund were one of the partners of festival’s 18th edition and Slovenia one of the focus countries with films by Metod Pevec (Aleksandrinke, [The Alexandrinians]), Jan Cvitkovič (Archeo), Damjan Kozole (Dolge počitnince, [The Long Vacations]), Nejc Gazvoda (Izlet, [A Trip]), Igor Šterk (9:06), Klemen Dvornik (Kruha in iger, [Bread & Circuses]). At MedFilm 2012 opus award was bestowed to Damjan Kozole, who was present at the festival together with Jan Cvitkovič.
In the framework of FrancoFilm 2013 at Institut français - Centre Saint-Louis in Rome, Slovenia was represented by Nejc Gazvoda’s awarded film Izlet [Trip], a portrait of the so-called lost generation. Film’s trademark is also its soundtrack, composed by the band New Wave Syria.
Literature and art
Embassy supports and helps to present works of Slovenian authors translated in Italian. In 2008 Embassy co-financed the translation of a book on Valvasor into Italian language.
The presentation of Izbira [Choice], for many an inspiring book, took place at the ECampus University Rome in October 2012, together with the author Renata Salecl (also active at the Institute of Criminology at the University of Ljubljana) whose work was translated into many languages. The edition in Italian was published by publishing house Laterza.
In 2010 Embassy collaborated with Roman Gallery Via Giulia 95 on a conference, where Tadej Pogačar, winner of Rihard Jakopič Award, and his work was presented.
In the frame of Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012 the presentation and potentials of the cultural capital were promoted, also with the inauguration of the exhibition of 100 Year City at the A+A Gallery in Venice. The same year theater play Medea’s Scream was presented together with theater production company Jurcer at the Vassello Theater in Rome.
Heritage and education
Embassy promotes Slovene-Italian friendship and the one-year project Campi Fascisti, conducted by researchers from Slovenia, Italy and Germany, who helped to archive the common heritage of concentration camps from the Second World War.
In March 2013 Embassy co-organised programme of the study excursion for students of Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana. The programme included a visit to Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI).
The lectureship of Slovenian Language at the Sapienza University in Rome cooperates with the Embassy on numerous small-scale projects and presentations of Slovene language or culture. In 2012 Days of Slovenian Documentary Film were screened there.
The Embassy occasionally disseminates information about scholarships and research grants for study in Slovenia or Italy. The Government Office for Slovenians Abroad also publishes an award for students on the topic Slovenian diaspora, including the one in Italy.
