The Union of Cultural Societies of Slovenia is a non-governmental, nationwide union comprising 65 local branches located in different Slovene towns. The network of branches brings together dozens of local cultural associations. It was established in 2002 and inherited the long networking traditions of local cultural associations and groups. The union seeks to stimulate the quality of cultural activities of a broad variety of genres and trends and to promote them both at home and abroad. The union also seeks to develop cultural diversity and stimulate co-operation involving minority cultures (see Cultural policy and infrastructure).
The union tackles common issues such as the collective management of copyrights or combating the weakening of the associations established in the socialist times. To strengthen its voice it is also a member of the Association of Associations of Slovenia established in 2003.
