The Ljubljana-based film production company Nosorogi was established in 2008 by a group of film graduates as a vehicle for the production of their first films. From 2012, it is led by Marina Gumzi, who re-envisioned the company as a boutique label for original, visually-driven films of emerging authors. A lot of attention is given to assure them international visibility by way of establishing and fostering collaborations with international partners.

By 2015, Nosorogi produced five short and mid-length documentaries, among them Critical Generation (co-produced with RTV SLovenia, directed by Lara Simona Taufer and Darko Sinko, 2010); Morra (by Matjaž Ivanišin, 2012); and Little Houses (by Darko Sinko and Matjaž Ivanišin, 2014). In 2019 the Stories from the Chestnut Woods, Gregor Božič's first feature film, received numerous Vesna awards at the Festival of Slovenian Film and was selected as the Slovenian entry at the 2021 Academy Awards.

Recent works

In 2015, Stories from the Chestnut Woods, the debut feature by Gregor Božič received development support from the Creative Europe Media fund and, in 2016, production support from Eurimages. A co-production with the Slovene-Italian Transmedia Production House, the film is based on three short stories by Anton Chekhov, and on selected recordings of folk traditions from the border regions between Slovenia and Italy. It addresses the phenomenon of mass emigration of youth and the consequent desolation of parts of the world.

Currently in development are some other titles by young Slovene authors, among them Playing Men, a creative documentary by Matjaž Ivanišin, a co-production between Slovenia, Croatia and France.

Marina Gumzi

Maribor-born Marina Gumzi studied dramaturgy, performance studies and film production in Ljubljana, Berlin, Ludwigsburg and Paris. After completing the postgraduate study of film production she took over the Nosorogi company. In that same year, she was appointed the manager for the film programme at Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012. Between 2012 and 2015, she was selected to participate at the Emerging Producers within Jihlava International Film Festival, at the EAVE Producers Workhop and at the Rotterdam Lab training programmes.
