Petra Pan Film Production (PPFP) was founded in 2003 and is run by the Slovene director, screenwriter and producer Petra Seliškar and the Cuban-Macedonian co-producer and director of photography Brand Ferro. Though this pair is PPFP's main creative arm, their enterprise also produces works by other authors.

The company predominantly focuses on creating imaginative documentaries. Nevertheless, it also produces art house fiction films and organises film education programmes and workshops. Its films have been given multiple festival screenings and awards throughout Europe.

Petra Seliškar

Petra Seliškar (1978) studied Film Directing at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy and got her Master's degree in film directing and production from the Northern Media School (UK) in 2001. With extensive experience in international collaborations, Petra is the national coordinator for the MEDIA European Documentary Network.

Documentary and feature films

Petra Pan has been involved in over 20 documentaries, feature films and TV series, most of them international co-productions.

A recurring theme in many of the company's projects has been that of tracing the cultural residues of Yugoslavia and its ensuing, bloody breakup. Among such films are The Grandmothers of the Revolution (directed by Petra Seliškar, 2006), Mostar United (directed by Claudia Tosi, 2008), Mother Europe (directed by Petra Seliškar, 2013), and Beyond Boundaries (directed by Peter Zach, 2016).

Particularly resounding among them was Mother Europe, a playful take on how the continent and its borders are perceived through the eyes of the director's six year-old daughter Terra. This road documentary takes Terra from Skopje to Trieste, where she meets various remarkable characters with fascinating stories. Another curious work, Grandmothers of the Revolution, investigated the role of ideology via interviews with the authors' grandfathers and grandmothers from Slovenia, Macedonia and Cuba.

Of a slightly different nature is the musical documentary My World Is Upside Down (2016). Inspired by the personality of Frane Milčinski Ježek (1914–1988), known as the Slovenian Charlie Chaplin, it features archive materials as well as fresh takes on his work by the likes of Willard Grant Conspiracy, Cesare Basile, Hugo Race, Bernays Propaganda, Toni Kitanovski & Cherkezi Orchestra, Chris Eckman, Teresa Salgueiro and Josipa Lisac.

Co-productions

Among Petra Pan's partner companies one can list Restart Ltd, RTV Slovenia, Tramal Films, Stefilm (IT), Movimenti Production (IT), Cobos Films (NL), YLE FST (FI), Lichtpunkt (BE), Jana Cisar Filmproduktion (DE), Dream Factory (MK), KAOS Amsterdam (NE), Movimento Nacional de Video (CU), Napafilms (FI), Tic Tac Producioness (ES), Zircozine (ES), Lagarto Cine (AR), RTV BiH (BA), Multicanal Iberia (ES), Propeler Film (HR), Minimal Films (Spain), End Street Productions (UK), etc.

Festival screenings and awards

Petra Pan's films and documentaries have been presented at festivals such as International Film Festival Rotterdam (DE), Gothenburg Indie Film Fest (SW), International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (NL), London International Documentary Film Festival (UK), Neisse Filmfestival (DE), Underhill Fest (ME), Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (GR), ZagrebDox (HR), LET'S CEE Film Festival (AT), Sarajevo Film Festival (BA), Trieste Film Festival (IT), etc. They have also been screened at various domestic festivals such as Ljubljana International Film Festival (LIFFe), Ljubljana Documentary Film Festival and DOKUDOC International Documentary Film Festival.

Petra Pan productions have been presented with many awards. Some of them are the ones for best direction (Taormina IFF 2010 and Gothenburg IFF 2014), best documentary film (Tuzla FF 2013), best film (Ourense IFF 2010 and Festival of Rock Documentaries 2011) and the audience award (Ourense IFF 2010). Petra Seliškar herself was also given the Darko Bratina Award.

International activities and the MakeDox Festival

Petra Pan is a decidedly international enterprise and in 2008 its partner company PPFP Macedonia was established. The tandem of Petra and Brand is also responsible for MakeDox, a pioneering Macedonian festival for documentaries that has been taking place in Skopje since 2010. Petra is its artistic director.

Yet another aspect of the duo's regional engagements is the Balkan Documentary Distribution Network, of which they are co-founders. The network comprises partners from Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro. It facilitates the circulation of quality and socially conscious documentary features around the region and is responsible for various international screening projects.
