Photographic works nowadays can be found as retrospectives of influential authors or as individual works in permanent collections in important national institutions such as Moderna Galerija (MG) and the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova or in regional influential venues such as the International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC) in Ljubljana or Maribor Art Gallery (UGM). MG has also managed a Photo Archive since its very beginning in 1948. A view on the history of photographic equipment can be glimpsed at the Josip Pelikan Photographic Studio in Celje and at the Photography Museum Maribor.

Exhibition venues and galleries that are focused exclusively on contemporary photography production are the Small Gallery in Cankarjev dom, Galerija Fotografija, Jakopič Gallery and Photon Gallery in Ljubljana, and Stolp Photogallery in Maribor. Rather than in photoclubs, the younger generation gathers at festivals such as the renewed Fotopub Festival based in Novo mesto that supports contemporary experimental artworks which approach or question photographic medium, be it in forms of installations, videos, graphic works or high-tech practices, exhibiting them through-out the year in Ljubljana venue at the abandoned petrol station at Tivolska ulica.

Photography has been present at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO) in Ljubljana since 1983 – first as a course and later as an independent study programme with the introduction of the Bologna reform in 2009. The Arts Academy of the University of Nova Gorica, established in 2008, also holds a module in photography. VIST – Higher School for Applied Arts offers a bachelor degree in photography since 2008 and is renowned for its biennial event FOTO VIST.

A bookstore specialising in photo books can be found at Galerija Fotografija in Ljubljana, where along the internationally acclaimed artists, local zine and artist’s books production can be found. The magazine Fotografija publishes reviews and theoretical research texts since 1997 and is issued in the English language as Membrana magazine.
