The Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in Trst/Trieste and the Consulate of the Republic of Slovenia in Milano are connected to the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Rome and together represent an official representative body of the Slovene Government to the Republic of Italy. The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Rome is also in charge of San Marino, Malta, Tunisia, and Libya.

The embassy and the consulates provide consular assistance and promote bilateral political, economic, and cultural relations between Slovenia and neighbouring Italy. They also represent the interests of the relatively large Slovene minority in Italy, particularly in the northeastern region.

Cultural cooperation

The legal basis for cooperation in the field of culture is the Yugoslav Agreement on Cooperation in Culture signed in 1960 and ratified in 1992 by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. The executive programmes of cultural cooperation between the Italian Republic and the Republic of Slovenia are signed for multi-annual periods, the one for the period 2004–2007 formed a basis of cultural exchange, stipends and activities in the field of culture and education. A number of agreements related to the Slovene minority in Italy and the Italian minority in Slovenia have also been signed. The Italy-Slovenia Cross-border Cooperation Operational Programme that is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) also includes some cultural programmes.

Slovene minority in Italy

When it comes to cooperation in the field of art and culture, the consulate uses the venues that are historically and culturally related to the Slovene minority in Trieste (Narodni dom, Trieste Bookshop, Slovene Permanent Theatre in Trieste, Mladika Publishing House, Trieste, and the Slovene National Study Library in Trieste). This is, in fact, the most numerous Slovene minority living outside Slovenia. According to th Government Office for Slovenians Abroad the number of Slovenians in Italy varies between 70,000 and 80,000. The majority is living in the regions of Trieste and Gorizia. The consulate facilitates official announcements and provides information to minority members and cooperates with numerous Slovene associations and societies around Trieste and Gorizia.

Film and visual arts

In 2013 the consulate supported the first short screening of Slovene films at the Slovene Permanent Theatre in Trieste. Films by Nejc Gazvoda, Klemen Dvornik, and Jan Cvitković were screened, together with talks with the actors and directors themselves.

In order to promote visual artists from Slovenia the consulate has supported exhibitions of Mito Gegič at Narodni dom in Trieste and an exhibition on fairy tales by Tina Dobrajc at the Trieste Bookshop, a store with books in Slovenian language. The consulate also supported an exhibition by young photographers at the Narodni dom in Trieste.
