The Department of Film and Television of the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT) was founded in 1963. The Department offers courses in film directing, television directing, film history, film theory, camera, editing and script writing. During the academic year, students pursue practical study assignments – each student shoots one short film and two short television dramas (on 16 mm film support or on video). Students also carry out a number of exercises in film and television directing, cinematography, and editing.
The Department collaborates with different Slovene institutions: (Radio-Television Slovenia (RTV Slovenia), Slovenian Film Centre, School of Arts, University of Nova Gorica, etc.) and foreign media institutions (mostly academies) and organisations.
The AGRFT Department of Film and Television regularly presents its students' work at various international festivals of student film and it has been awarded several prizes in Tel Aviv, Angers, Poitiers, Edinburgh, Oberhausen, Wiesbaden, and Munich.
The Department is also a founding and active member of the Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles du Cinéma et Télévision (CILECT) and the Groupement Européennes des Ecoles du Cinéma et Télévision (GEECT).
