The mixed chamber choir Ljubljanski madrigalisti was originally established in 1991 as a 30-member choir led by Matjaž Šček. Today its conductor is Mateja Kališnik. The choir's repertoire comprises choral music of all periods, primarily Renaissance music and sacred music performed in churches; it also interprets contemporary Slovene compositions (occasionally written specially for the choir) and folk songs. The choir performs around 30 concerts a year, one third of these abroad.

Background

From 2003 to 2010 the conductor was Andreja Martinjak. The choir achieved many successes at that time, the most important ones being the first prize in Naša pesem Choir Competition of 2007 and the second prize in the 7th International Choral Competition Maribor 2008, where they also received an award for being the best Slovene choir at the competition. The choir's first project with Mateja Kališnik was a CD recording Evharistično srce.

International cooperation and awards

The choir mostly performs a capella but they also participate in bigger choral events and occasionally work with RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra. In October 2010 the choir co-organised Ragnar Rasmussen's conductor seminar in Ljubljana, where they also worked as a demonstration choir. In March 2009 they cooperated with the 5th international competition for young choral conductors in Ljubljana. So far the choir has toured to Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic.

The choir has received several awards, including a prize at Jersey and a gold plaque in the Naša pesem Choir Competition of 2001. In 2009 they participated in international choral competition in Spittal, Austria, and in the fall of the same year they again worked as a demonstration choir, this time with Peter Hanke. In November 2010 the choir won the first prize in the 20th International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music in Prague, Czech Republic, where they also received a special prize for the best performance of any of Peter Eben's song.

Discography

The choir's varied discography includes music of the 20th century; compositions by Gallus; compositions performed together with the Madrigal Quintet from Brno, Czech Republic; new adaptations of Slovene folk songs, and new choral adaptations of prayers.
