The Institute Nova revija for the Humanities is an organisation dedicated to interdisciplinary research and study pertaining to the fields of humanities, social sciences and arts, to the publication of journals and books, and to the organisation of scientific meetings, conferences and other related events.

The institute was founded by Nova revija Publishing House in 2006.

Background

The Nova revija Publishing House was formed in 1990 around the journal of the same name, launched in 1982 by Cankarjeva Publishing House. Nova revija Journal became a vehicle for and a persistent voice of intellectual scepticism and freedom. The legendary 57th issue, published in 1987, is today regarded a symbol of the Slovene fight for independence. Entitled Contributions toward the Slovene National Programme, the special issue addressed questions related to the then political situation in Slovenia, calling for greater sovereignty and condemning the rising centralist policy in Yugoslavia.

The journal featured articles in the fields of literature and culture, such as contemporary Slovene literature, translations, discussions, and interviews. Nova revija ceased publication in 2010.

In the 1990s and 2000s Nova revija publishing house launched four other periodicals – Phainomena, Poligrafi, Ampak, and Dignitas – and also published several book collections. In 2010 Ampak, a monthly illustrated magazine for culture, politics and economy, has ceased publication after 10 years.

In 1993 the Nova revija Publishing House established together with the Slovene Writers’ Association the Josip Jurčič Foundation to bestow journalists with a Jurčič Award. Since 2008 the award has been granted by the Josip Jurčič Foundation of the Nova revija Institute.

Publications

The institute publishes Phainomena, a philosophical journal, Poligrafi, a journal for religious studies, and a diverse array of book titles in Slovenian and English. Notable in its publishing programme is Slovenski zgodovinski atlas (Slovenian Historical Atlas), which is a pioneer work of Slovene historiography. They launched online bookshop EBEREM where you can buy their books and journals.

Research

The institute aims to facilitate a platform whereby research and innovation will be integrated and translated into all aspects of social, cultural, and economic life. The interdisciplinary and specialised research conducted at the institute draws impetus from all facets of the humanities as well as from the current historical moment and social reality, such as law, ecology, and cognitive science. They foster cooperation with foreign individuals and organisations, in particular from Southeast and East Europe. Graduate and postgraduate students figure significantly in the activities and projects initiated by the institute, encouraging fruitful application of received academic knowledge.
