Established in 1993, the Association of Slovene Restorers is a voluntary association of professional conservator-restorers (around 300 members), who have been educated in the field and have a restoration certificate. The association seeks to facilitate the further development of restoration practice as well as to spread the knowledge of the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage among the population.

Since 2008 it bestows the Mirko Šubic Award and Recognitions for achievement in restoration.

Activities

Special working groups deal with issues of legislation, international cooperation, and education. The Association of Slovene Restorers organises various study trips, lectures, and workshops. The association tries to fill a gap in restoration education in Slovenia – at present, tertiary education in this area exists only for sculpture and painting restoration and is offered by the Department of Restoration, Academy of Fine Arts and Design.

Mirko Šubic Award

The conservator-restorers gained their own award in 2008; until then they had to compete with conservators for the Stele Award or with museum workers for the Valvasor Award. The award is named after Mirko Šubic (1900–1976), who is found to be the most deserving for the development of modern Slovene restoration, and a brother of the architect Vladimir Šubic. He was a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design and restored many frescos in castles and churches, including Hrastovlje, Crngrob, and Olimlje.

The award is given for the life-time achievements in the field of the restoration, to honour the most deserving conservator-restorers and also to draw attention to the current issues in the field. In addition, the Association of Slovene Restorers bestows Mirko Šubic Recognitions for important achievements in restoration in the previous year, while the Mirko Šubic Honorary Recognition is awarded to supporting members.

Some of the award winners are Gojka Pajagič Bregar (2017), Josip Korošec (2016), Milada Makuc Semion (2015), Nada Madžarac (2014), Marjanca Ambrožič Jeglič (2011), Jedert Vodopivec Tomažič (2009), and Zoran Milić (2008).
