Archival article

The Slovenian Scientific Institute Vienna was established in 2000 with the support of the University of Ljubljana, University of Maribor and the University of Nova Gorica in order to promote bilateral scientific cooperation between institutions and individuals in Slovenia and Austria. The institute offers support, grants and organisational help to researchers and institutions and also cares about the promotion of Slovene heritage in Vienna.

Historical background

The Slovenian Scientific Institute Vienna is housed in the Knafelj House in Vienna, which is known for being the residence for students from Slovenia and Carniola since 1676. Upon his death, the Roman Catholic priest Luka Knafelj (Lucas Knaffel) established the Knafelj Foundation (Knafljeva ustanova) for the future Slovene intelligentsia which has since enabled nearly 1300 students to study at the University of Vienna. Among others the Slovene poets France Prešeren and Oton Župančič received Knafelj stipends in the past.

Activities

One of the institute's main activities is to assist and support research cooperation between educational institutions, universities, archives, libraries, museums, and individuals from Slovenia or Austria pursuing or conducting a research.

The institute also organises regular lectures, symposia, and conferences by guests from Slovenia or Austria and offers a publishing support to Slovene researchers. The institute houses a library and also serves as a small exhibition venue for artists.
