During its 30 years of existence the Cankarjev dom, Cultural and Congress Centre has become an important presenter of visual art in Slovenia. Beside the Cankarjev dom Small Gallery and exhibition wall in the First Foyer, where the exhibitions Fine Arts Critics Choice of the Association of Slovenian Fine Art Critics are featured, the Cankarjev dom Gallery (CD Gallery) is the main venue of the Centre exhibiting programme.

Apart from its profiled programme CD Gallery is often one of the key exhibition spaces where large projects take place in Ljubljana, such as the Biennial of Graphic Arts, the exhibition 100 Years of Photography, and the Manifesta 3 European Biennial of Contemporary Art held in Ljubljana. It is also a regular venue for the Biennial of Slovene Book Illustration.

Programme and exhibitions

As a mid-scale gallery of 364 square metres CD Gallery hosts a varied exhibition programme of visual arts (painting, sculpture and architecture) through new media to complex themed group exhibitions also covering general fields of culture. Its programme often corresponds to the events and festivals of the main Cankarjev dom programme.

In recent years the Cankarjev dom programme has been frequently focused on national overviews. In 2010 it presented the Armenia Close Up Festival and the CD Gallery featured the cultural and historic exhibition Armenian Tradition Between the Secular and the Sacred displaying artifacts of Armenian church art from the 12th to the 19th century. The exhibition was prepared in collaboration with the History Museum of Armenia and devised by its director Anelka Grigoryan. In spring 2008 the Italian Egyptologist Francesco Tiradritti's curated exhibition Pharaonic Renaissance was the central event of the Festival of Egyptian Culture. 2016 saw an exhibition on Nikola Tesla and in 2019 they held an exhibition on science and technology in ancient Greece.

CD Gallery also gives floor to thematic and historical exhibitions of Slovene art (for example, The Nude in Slovene Arts, Media in the Painting and The Politics of Painting, Eduard Stepančič and the Constructivist Principle, The Birth of Modernism with the paintings from 1976–1980 by Emerik Bernard and Tomo Podgornik). It has prepared solo exhibitions by eminent artists (Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Giorgio Morandi, Arnulf Rainer, Richard Hamilton, Edo Murtić, Ivan Meštrović), younger avant-garde artists (Maria Klonaris & Katerina Thomadaki), as well as solo presentations of Slovene artists such as La comédie humaine by Karel Zelenko in 2008 or the retrospective exhibition of illustrious Slovenian sculptor Dušan Tršar in winter 2009.
