The Faculty of Arts at the University of Maribor was established in September 2006 when the former Academy of Education (Pedagoška akademija) was transformed into three faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the Faculty of Education. The Faculty of Arts at the University of Maribor is a young faculty although the history of its study programmes is much longer. The faculty has 12 departments with twelve undergraduate study programmes in humanities and seven doctoral study programmes. The faculty maintains a rich library and the faculty's gallery features exhibitions by Slovene artists.

Background

Since the 1960s study programmes in Slovene, English, Germanic and Hungarian studies, History, Geography, Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology, and Pedagogy have been taught at the Pedagogy Academy at the University of Maribor. Newly established departments are Translation studies and Art History. With the opening of the institutionally independent Faculty of Arts in 2006 the city of Maribor established a study centre for arts and humanities.

Today

In 2008 the Faculty of Arts employed 96 academic staff members. Since its founding the faculty has developed and opened several study centres: Centre for Life-long Education, Centre for Eco-remediation, Centre for the Study of the Post-Yugoslav Societies, Centre for Intercultural Dialogue between the countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Publishing

The Faculty of Arts publishes several scientific journals at its publishing centre. The Department of Slavic Languages and Literature publishes Slavia Centralis, a biannually published journal with an international editorial board and a circulation of 300 copies.

The Department of Geography publishes Revija Geography [Geography Review] which has an international editorial board and publishes articles in Slovenia, English and German. Articles from the first two numbers are available online.

The Faculty of Arts also publishes the international collection ZORA. Since 1998 they have published 68 editions of ZORA. The collection consists of articles in a variety of disciplines (English studies, Slavic Languages, History, Education ...) and the description of every edition is available online.

Library

The Library of the Faculty of Arts (Miklošičeva knjižnica) is a common library of the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The library contains around 120,000 units and is one of the largest university libraries within the University of Maribor. The library provides reading places with 150 seats.
