The Department of Geography at the University of Ljubljana has a long tradition. The Department offers 2 study programs, both pedagogic and non-pedagogic, and with optional combination with another two-disciplinary study programme. The PhD in Geography is offered as a part of interdisciplinary doctoral programme, offered at the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social Sciences.

Background

The Department was established in 1919, the same year as Ljubljana's University. The thirty-two staff members, both pedagogic and non-pedagogic, deal with around 500 students, at a graduate and postgraduate study programme. In 2002 the Department launched a research institute, focusing on environmental and regional-development studies.

The Department also houses the largest geographical library, which is a part of Faculty of Arts Central Humanities Library.

Publications

There are several publications run by the Department's staff and its collaborators. One is DELA, a periodical aimed at scientific paper and materials. The other publication is GeograFF aimed for a more general public interested in geography. Articles of both publications are available in digital copies at DLib.si - Digital Library of Slovenia.

International cooperation

Besides the international agreements on an university level, the Department has a substantial partnerships in other European cities (Paris, Lille, Liege, Amsterdam, Aberdeen, Liverpool, Dublin, München, Würzburg, Münster, Seville, Bilbao, Lisbona, Beja, Freiburg, Prague, Brno, Olomouc, Krakow, Lublin, Riga, Trieste, Graz etc.).
