Background
The award is named after Anton Aškerc, first urban archivist of Ljubljana, set up in July 1898. Aškerc is a pioneer of Municipal Archives of Ljubljana, which was in 1973 renamed in the Historical Archives Ljubljana. Already 100 years ago he advocated and achieved some still fundamental archival principles.
Aškerc award is given for lifetime achievement to individuals or institutions in archival science for outstanding contributions to promotion and development of the archival science in Slovenia and abroad. Individuals of merit can receive award also for multiannual activity in the Archival Association of Slovenia (AAS).
In addition, the society also recognises important contribution to archival science in the past year to non-member or sponsor.
