Established in 1960 with the merging of two existing city libraries, Kranj Central Library performs the tasks of regional library for Gorenjska, serving as a public library and a culture and information centre for a region with 75,000 inhabitants. The Library has a Youth Department and a mobile library and manages branches in Stražišče, Naklo, Preddvor, Šenčur, Cerklje and Jezersko. It has 19,000 registered readers who borrow around 750,000 items each year from a total collection of 370,000 items. A notable feature of the library is its rich collection of audio CDs. The library also offers several books and multimedia items on Gorenjska and its peoples and a collection of poetry editions and secondary literature by Slovene Romantic poet France Prešeren, who lived in Kranj.

The Library Association of Gorenjska is based at the library.
