The NGO Legal Information Centre was initiated by the Open Society Institute and established by seven NGOs in 1997. It offers support to non-governmental organisations, marginalised and deprived groups (eg refugees, children, young people, old people, the homeless and the handicapped) and other civil movements and groups, as well as other interested individuals and organisations. Several of its activities focus on improving the status of NGOs, which can not only get legal aid and free legal advice but also professional information related to financing (taxation, accounting, financial planning), information distribution or education (co-operation between NGOs and local or EU organisations, safety at work, etc). LIC projects include analyses of local legislation and comparative analyses with a view to initiating changes in legislation, thus offering socially-deprived individuals or groups direct legal assistance in the fields of company law, organisation of non-governmental and non-profit-making organisations, human rights, environmental law, social law, consumer protection law, labour law, housing law and other legal fields where protection is called for. LIC also focuses on consciousness-building and the education of its target groups through the organisation of public discussions and other activities. Through the LIC Centre for Mediation, a network of advisers in several cities around Slovenia offer professional conflict management and education on the topic of mediation, both at individual level and at the level of organisations, local communities or state, in all spheres of life – at home, in the workplace and at school. LIC is a member of several local and international organisations, including CIVICUS, TRIALOG, the [[Centre for Information Service, Co-operation and Development of NGOs (CNVOS)]], CEAVA, VIENNA PLATFORM, the UN Regional Network Eastern Europe and the Union of Associations and Non Governmental Organisations in the Field of Drugs of Slovenia.

Projects

LIC is a member of several local and international organisations, including CIVICUS, TRIALOG, the Centre for Information Service, Co-operation and Development of NGOs (CNVOS), CEAVA, VIENNA PLATFORM, the UN Regional Network Eastern Europe and the Union of Associations and Non Governmental Organisations in the Field of Drugs of Slovenia.
