In 2008 the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana co-organised the Summer School Bovec for the first time. The school is run by Professor Vladimir Wakounig from the Alpe-Adria University in Klagenfurt, Austria. The Summer School is aimed for students and is organised together with the partner universities from the region and each year addresses many different topics in the society, culture, common heritage. The aim is to encourage intercultural dialogue between the countries in the region.

The Summer School is visited by students and professors from University of Trieste, Unviersity of Ljubljana, Univeristy of Primorska, University of Udine, and University of Klagenfurt. The School takes place in Bovec, in the last two weeks in August. Its programme consists of lectures, presentations, language courses (Slovenian, Italian, German, Croatian, and Furlan), field trips, excursions and visits to museums, also the famous Kobarid Museum.

Each year the school board chooses a certain main topic. In the previous years, this was Kruh in Vino ('Bread and Wine'), in 2010 the topic is Social Diversity in the Region: Cultural, Linguistic, Social and Economic Aspects.
