Jazz Kamp Kranj is an international event that combines an extensive workshop programme with a festival series of evening concerts in the city of Kranj. It was launched in 2004 by the internationally established local jazz musicians, the brothers Gregor Grašič and Primož Grašič. Strictly speaking, the whole thing is actually not a camp, as the workshops take place at the music school in the city centre, where also the evening concerts and jam sessions take place. They are mainly held at the garden of the Cafe gallery Pungert (the potential refuge in case of bad weather is the Layer's House), though some concerts are spaced around the streets of the old city centre.

Workshops

The workshops are led by an international selection of renowned and established jazz artists who offer mentorship to professional as well as amateur jazz, pop and classical musicians, who want to improve their skills on their instrument and participate in different ad hoc musical collectives.

Some of the mentors so far were Emil Spanyi (HU), Christophe Bras (FR), Georgie Fame (GB), David Gazarov (DE), Erich Bachtraegl (AT), Heinz von Hermann (AT), Boško Petrović (HR), Scott Devine (GB) and dozens of others. Of the Slovenian mentors, the guitarist, composer, arranger, producer and also organiser Primož Grašič is regularly participating, as do a lot of musicians that otherwise play in the RTV Slovenia Big Band.

Concert programme

Some of the artists presented at the evening stages were Big Band Krško, Bossa de Novo, Jure Pukl Quartet, Big band Dom, Ratko Divjak Trio, Blues Breakers (AT), Dubravko Vorih & New tribe (HR), Binho Carvalho Band (BR, SI), Mike Sponza Band & Joyce Yuille (US, IT), David Gazarov trio (DE) and numerous others. In course of the Jazz Kamp Kranj days, the participants of the workshops as well as their mentors also have an evening each dedicated to their respective concerts.

The Summer Jazz Academy from the Croatian city of Grožnjan is regularly invited to the Jazz Kamp Kranj. This is due to the fact that the late Croatian musician Boško Petrović, the founder of the festival and summer jazz school in Grožnjan, had a very long and productive collaboration with Primož Grašić. Their cooperation has led to the Jazz Kamp Kranj traditionally having its day in Grožnjan and the Grožnjan "academy" in Kranj.
