Beside the Smrekar Award for lifetime achievement, it also includes awards for best illustration, Smrekar plaques and special mentions for innovative approach and original drawing, as well as an award for the best young creator.
The Smrekar Award for lifetime achievements has previously been bestowed to Marlenka Stupica, Ančka Gošnik Godec, Jelka Šubert Reichman, Marija Vogelnik, Milan Bizovičar, Marjanca Jemec Božič. In 2008 it went to Štefan Planinc.
The Smrekar Award for best illustration recieved Marija Lucija Stupica (2x), Dušan Muc, Rudi Skočir, Zvonko Čoh, Jelka Godec Schmidt, Alenka Sottler and Kostja Gatnik.
