In addition to extensive recordings of the folk music of Slovenia, the Sound Archive features recordings of the folk music of other South Slavic nations and of other European and non-European nations. The collection comprises: (i) recordings on wax cylinders dating from 1914-1919 partially preserved wax cylinders from Adlešiči and Preloka; (ii) recordings on gramophone records - discs of various formats, including unique acetates; (iii) field recordings on magnetic tape made from 1955 onwards - a collection of audio recordings of around 29,000 folk songs and instrumental melodies, some with transcriptions, with card indexes by serial number, place of origin, theme, first verse, beginning of the melody and metre; (iv) recordings on cassette (published cassettes and audio cassettes recorded in the field); (v) recordings on Digital Audio Tape (DAT); (vi) recordings on compact disc (CD and CD-R); and (vii) visual documentation - folklore-themed films, videocassettes (various formats), VCDs and DVDs, and a photographic and slide library (folk singers, musicians, instruments, dances, work of the Institute).
The archive also contains manuscripts, song books and other materials relating to the documentation of the work of the Institute and earlier folk song collection campaigns, plus an important collection of folk instruments.
Adjacent to the archive is a fully-equipped recording studio.
