Through its presence as a non-governmental national institution in the field of science and through a concrete programme of co-operation, especially with non-governmental national and international science foundations, the Foundation extends international scientific co-operation on behalf of the Slovene scientific community in order to accelarate and promote scientific research. Stipends for additional studies and postgraduate studies are offered twice each year; in Autumn and Spring, according to the availability of funds.
International cooperation
The Slovene Science Foundation joined the European Science Foundation (ESF) in 1995; ESF programmes supported up to 2003 included Life, Environmental and Earth Sciences, Physical and Engineering Sciences and also Humanities (Cultural Exchange in Europe, 1400–1700).
From 2002 until 2007 the foundation cooporated with the World Federation of Scientists and in 2007 organised the 6th Noordung's Forum, named after and devoted to the Slovenian-born rocket engineer and a space flight pioneer Herman Potočnik Noordung, to whom a memorial centre in Vitanje was dedicated.
The foundation also organises the international Slovenian Science Festival, each year devoted to a different scientist or to a special event and occassion. In 2011 when UNESCO declared The International Year of Chemistry and The Year of Forests, the 17th edition of the festival run with the slogan The Planetary Challenges for Today and Tommorow.
