Museums permanent collection shows everyday life in Celje in 20th century and history of three diferent generations that went trough turmoils of wars, mid and post war periods politic changes in lower savinjska region and town of Celje in particular.The objects on display are mostly from the late 19th and 20th centuries, but some date from the 18th century.

In 1951 a department for the History of the National Liberation War was established at Celje Municipal Museum, and in 1963 this became an independent cultural institution. In 1979 the museum obtained additional premises, and in 1987-89 a permanent exhibition on the development of the town of Celje after the Second World War was set up. In 1991 the institution was renamed the [[Celje Museum of Contemporary History]]. In 2000 the permanent exhibition Life in Celje opened, featuring the diary of three generations living in Celje in the course of the 20th century and , a reconstruction of the Celjska street as it looked in the inter-war period. In 1993 the museum opened its dentistry collection, donated to the museum by private collector Dr Franc Štolf.

In recent years the museum has also opened the Children`s Museum 'Herman's Den', which has its own mascot, 'Herman the Fox'.. It has five exhibition areas including the museum workshop and playroom, Herman's Gallery, Herman's Theatre and a depository where the collections are kept. The collections consist of children's toys, prams and bicycles. Herman II. was Count of Celje (1365 - 1435) during his period this noble family had a great strenght and was compiting with Habsburgs for the crown of the emperor of great German Roman empire.
