Televizija Slovenija is one of the two programme units of the Slovene public broadcaster Radio-Television Slovenia (RTV Slovenia). With three TV channels Televizija Slovenija represents the most important state-owned television broadcaster.

History of public broadcasting

Television Slovenia celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008, having commenced regular experimental programming from the Ljubljana TV studio in October 1958. The new station was incorporated into the Yugoslav media scheme from an early date, with Ljubljana preparing 30 per cent of common Yugoslav TV programming. By 1960 TV programmes were being broadcast five days a week. The first live coverage for Eurovision was ski jumping from Planica in 1960.

In April 1968 the main evening newscast was broadcast for the first time in the Slovene language, in place of the common Yugoslav programme in Serbo-Croat which originated from Belgrade. In 1971 the first bilingual TV station was launched in Koper-Capodistria as a part of RTV Slovenia Regional Broadcasting Centre Koper-Capodistria with programmes in Italian, and in colour for the first time. Colour broadcasting commenced on TV Ljubljana in the mid 1970s, teletext was introduced in 1984 and satellite TV broadcasting began in 1992. In 2002 an additional regional television channel was launched from the RTV Slovenia Regional Broadcasting Centre in Maribor. Since the end of 2010 the transmission switched to digital technology and a year after followed the complete shut out of the analogue signal.

Programming

Today Television Slovenia's two national and two regional stations broadcast a variety of programmes 24 hours each day, the majority being in-house productions. The national television channel is an important producer of cultural programming, and Television Slovenia often matches funds with (or offers equipment and staff to) the Slovenian Film Centre or the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT) as a co-producer of TV films, animation or video. In March 2008 the TV Slovenia 3 Parliamentary Programme was launched.

International cooperation

The television unit cooperated within Strategic Projection of European Activities Developed (SPREAD) Project with the aim of the dissemination innovative communication strategy by the Open and Distance Learning (ODL).

According to the Constitution Law regarding the minorities living in Slovenia, the television broadcast produces television programme in Italian, Hungarian and Romani language within the regional RTV Slovenia broadcast network in Maribor and Koper-Capodistria. Furthermore, the TV-show Slovenian Magazine in English and German presents the cultural events, historical heritage and tourist potential in Slovenia, with broadcast on New York based Channel 25 WNYE, US educational programme SCOLA, European satellite EbS, German channel 3Sat, TV Koper-Capodistria (in Italian), and also as a part of multicultural broadcast programme in Sydney, Melbourne and Buenos Aires.
