The aim of the festival is to create a referential international platform for discussing the latest developments within audio technology research and the artistic trends in sonic practices. EarZoom is featuring international artists and scientists presenting state of the art research in exciting disciplines like machine listening, algorithmic composition, new interfaces for musical expression, gesture recognition, ubiquitous computing, ambisonic systems for virtual sound environment synthesis, etc. The invited artists and researchers give talks on their research activities, organization schemes and their artistic productions, and further, present those in form of live performances, installations and workshops. The festival also aims to creating a dialogue amongst existing Slovenian institutions which are already running individual cycles of contemporary music and sonic arts. Those are involved in the organization of the festival by either offering the infrastructure or producing individual festival components (events or concert series).

Programme
- EarZoom is composed as a three-day symposium. - It's events feature both art projects (concerts, installations, performances etc.) and lectures from the researchers of contemporary arts. - It also includes various workshops with a wide selection of different sub-topics of electronic music, ranging from mobile music computing to hardware hacking.
- While the main point of the symposium is the presenting of new trends in art, it is also a place of critical reflection. - The festival is a platform for discussion between the institutions and the artist and a way of creating a context for IRZU's work both in international and local networks - the concept of the festival expanded from technology-exclusive centred art to a more wide socio-political context that tries to raise questions about power structures.
- In 2013 the main focus was live coding, where the musician is writing computer code live on stage, which is then being transformed into music. - In 2010, the 6-day festival featured over 40 international scientists and artists. - and in 2013 it introduced for the first time an international call for works.

- For this reason they decided to put these and other questions, concerning survival and identity creation within the institutional landscape, in the focus of this years festival edition. This kind of perspective extends the scope of the festival and opens a discussion concerning a broader range of cultural workers sharing a similar situation.
- „Music technology startups“ is the central theme of this year's festival and points out artistic projects that emerged through the development of commercial technology and products. The choice of this topic is based on our own experience with establishing IRZU – the Institute for Sonic Arts Research, which was founded in 2009. IRZU is actively engaged in three different areas within the field of music technology, that is: technological research and development, artistic production and education. Based on the results of IRZU's R&D activity, the spin-off company Ultrasonic audio technologies was established in 2011,
- showcase a selection of hardware and software projects, most of which refer to performance practice in contemporary electro-acoustic music and include state of the art technologies and concepts from the field of human-computer interaction, algorithmic composition and music information retrieval. EarZoom 2014 will try to outline the current trends of music and audio technologies that aim to address the needs of broader user groups, as well as offer a glimpse into the future of audio technology development.

- Transcultures: Centre for Intermedia and sonic arts & cultures (Mons, BE); - Nida Art Colony: Interdisciplinary art, education & residency center (Vilnius/Nida, LT); - Kitchen Budapest: Cross-disciplinary new media lab (Budapest, HU); - Pixelache: Festival of electronic art and subcultures (Helsinki, FI); - MigAA: Migrating Art Academies (Cologne/DE, Vilnius/LT, Poitiers & Angoulême/FR).
- Together, they created a network called T.R.A.C.E.S. - Transcultural Research, Artist, Curator Exchange Series. It's purpose is the discussion about the internal workings that unfold behind the scenes, regarding both artistic and curatorial practices. The reason for this is the fact that these behind-the-curtains processes occupy a large portion of an organization’s working resources.
- TRACES is a series of artistic, research and curatorial dialogue and trans European exchange with a focus on interdisciplinary and transcultural practices in contemporary art and performance, resulting in a publication/DVD of the program and ongoing collaborative platform.
- A common ground and activities based in sound, media, performance and urban site-specific arts (interdisciplinary) links the partners, working in a series of critically engaged dialogues on the transmission, infection and dissemination of contemporary creative practices. - Imagining an ongoing partnership towards a mobile cultural practice going beyond the frontiers of individual countries, cities, artists and curators.

- In 2012 the festival was held in connection with ICMC- International Computer Music Conference - which has been the most important european forum for research, both musical and theoretical, involving computers in creation of music since 1974. - It is the annual conference of the Internation Computer Music Association (ICMA). Each year it is held in different countries and in 2012 it was held in Slovenia.

We've got exclusive electronics & technologies from institutions such as Fraunhofer, IRCAM, Technische Universität Wien and the Music Technology Group at Pompeu Fabra - and you'll get your hands on these before anyone else. There will be awards for the best entries in a range of different categories - and we have some money set aside to support promising projects to develop beyond the festival into real world commercial prototypes.
