Jakac House in Novo mesto houses a collection of works by Božidar Jakac (1899-1989), a Slovene painter, graphic artist, art teacher, photographer and filmmaker, who was also instrumental in establishing the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and the Ljubljana International Biennial of Graphic Art. The house was originally built in 1904 by the artist's father and functioned for many years as a hotel and inn. In the early 1980s the house was donated to Novo mesto by the artist and in 1984 it was converted into a gallery of Jakac's work by the Dolenjska Museum, Novo mesto, which now manages it.

Collection

The gallery houses over 800 works, a representative cross-section of Jakac's work as a young artist. The second floor presents works from Jakac's numerous travels to America, France, Norway, Italy, England, Germany and other countries. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1999 the museum prepared a selection of his works relating to the scenery of Dolenjska and its people. This exhibition is now installed on the ground and first floors. An educational art collection comprising numerous collected works by well-known Slovene artists is also exhibited on the third floor, forming a study collection of all genres of the visual arts.
