The Union of Cultural Societies of Slovenia is a non-governmental, in-country union comprising 65 local branches located in different towns. The network of branches brings together dozens of local cultural associations. It was established in 2002 and inherited the long networking traditions of local cultural associations and groups. The Union seeks to stimulate the quality of cultural activities and to promote them both at home and abroad. The criteria are broad and open to all genres and trends. The Union also seeks to develop cultural diversity and stimulate co-operation involving minority cultures (see Cultural policy and infrastructure).
The Union tackles common issues such as collective management of copyright or the weakening of the associations established in the socialist times. To strenghten its voice it became a member of the Association of Associations of Slovenia established in 2003.
