The establishment of Središče Art Centre as a non-profit NGO for culture, art and development in 2000 was the result of a successfully-implemented TEMPUS PHARE Cross-Border Co-operation project to create an intra-regional cultural artistic centre within a former frontier guard's building on the Slovenia-Hungary border at Goričko, close to the town Središče-Szerdahely in the eastern Pomurje region. The first purpose-built art residency centre in Slovenia, this multifunctional building houses artists' studios equipped with facilities for drawing, painting, woodcarving, sculpting in stone and metalwork. An art foundry for casting into sand, cast moulds and ceramics was built recently. The resulting works can be exhibited temporarily in the dining room or in the studios themselves.
Since Spring 2007 the Art Centre has been closed in line with a local government decision. Several protests have been lodged. In the meanwhile the Art Središče Institute and its crew are operating the Atelje Azil [Asylum Studio] at Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Centre in collaboration with the KUD Mreža Arts and Culture Association.
