Launched in 1993, Matkurja.com – a guide to virtual Slovenia was the first Slovene web directory and used to be the Slovenia's most popular search engine (today rated 60th), with small bits of information in English. Mat'kurja means "the hen's mother" – a comment on the geographical shape of Slovenia, which is also visible in the memorable illustration by Tomaž Lavrič.

Background

Mat'Kurja portal was developed at the Jožef Stefan Institute and launched on 23 November 1993. Its creators to be mentioned are Boris Čibej, Mišo Alkalaj, Vuk Ćosić and Tomaž Lavrič as well as developers Marko Martinc, Mateja Celcer, Joh Dokler, Žiga Kranjec, Ivan Ivanjko in Vitja Matjašič. Its initial name Slowwwenia was changed Mat'kurja in March 1997.

Today Mat'Kurja is a public domain database, UPC Telemach, Slovenia's leading broadband operator, being the project leader.

Contents

Matkurja.com comprises catalogues of information, including Slovenia's history, geography, government, economy, culture, language, food and drink, with a searchable directory of Slovenian web.
