Metlika People’s Library
Activities
The library is a cultural and information centre of Metlika Municipality and cooperates with the regional Centre for Lifelong Learning. Several projects are organised, catering to all age groups, from children to elderly people. Adults and secondary school pupils are invited to participate in book clubs.
In cooperation with the Metlika Centre for social work they prepare an array of events for the Romani people in the library, as well as workshops, fairy tale hours, puppet shows for children in Romani settlements. The project Romani People Invited to the Library [Romi, povabljeni v knjižnico] was in 2011 granted the International Reading Association Award for Innovative Reading Promotion in Europe.
Librarians also pay monthly visits to Metlika Retirement House to bring books, read and discuss them with the elderly who cannot come to the library. The mobile library strives to bring a selection of books, films and cartoons to remote parts of Metlika Municipality.
