Maribor Academic Choir unites students from Maribor and the wider Štajerska (Podravje region). It has been operating since 1964 when the student cultural association (KUD Študent) with its male choir was established. The choir’s first conductor was Stane Jurgec. As soon as the University of Maribor was established in 1975 the choir became mixed, and under the name Maribor Academic Choir went on to win some of the most prestigious prizes at home and abroad, including the gold medal at competitions in Cork, Ireland (1986), in Pardubice, Czech Republic (1995), and at the Naša pesem Choir Competition (1997). More recently it received awards in 2004 at the University Choir Festival in Bologna and at the International Choir Competition in Jersey.

Maribor Academic Choir has toured to the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Austria. It has been led by several recognised conductors, including Stane Jurgec, Simon Robinson from the UK, Jože Fürst and - since 2002 - Zsuzsa Budavari-Novak from Hungary.
