The daily newspaper Večer [Evening] has appeared since 1945 (renamed to Večer from Vestnik after seven years) and is the central newspaper in eastern Slovenia published by Večer Publishing House. Its current print-run is 45,000 copies per issue and an online version has been available since 1998.


According to the National Research on Readership Večer was read daily in 2009 by 123,000 people, giving it a 7.2 per cent daily reach. Večer correspondent offices are located in Ljubljana, Celje, Murska Sobota, Ravne na Koroškem, Slovenska Bistrica, Ptuj, and Trbovlje. The Culture and Education section incorporates several special supplements: Čitalnica [Reading room] on Monday, Šolska stran [School page] and Znanost [Science] on Tuesday, Film on Wednesday, Arhitekturna beseda [Architectural word] on Thursday and a TV supplement on Friday. Two pages of the Saturday Supplement are also dedicated to culture. Večer has cooperated with the French newspaper Le Soir and other international newspapers.

The newspaper confers the annual Večernica Award for the best literary work by young people.
