The Slovene Reading Association was established in 1995 with the motto 'to promote reading is to promote knowledge and more meaningful life'. Its goals are to disseminate knowledge through reading, to organise national and local events which promote reading, to raise awareness of the importance of reading and to support those involved with the teaching of reading.

The Association organises various important public debates and conferences. On the 2005 Day of Literacy (8 September) it organised the conference 'How to Improve Teaching Literacy in Schools', and in 2006 it staged a panel discussion on the implementation of the National Literacy Development Strategy at Cankarjev dom.

The Slovene Reading Association is a national affiliate of the US-based International Reading Association (IRA).
