Named after Slovene graphic artist, illustrator and caricaturist Hinko Smrekar (1883–1942), the Hinko Smrekar Award is the national award for the best Slovene book illustrators. It has been bestowed since 1993 at the Biennial of Slovene Book Illustration, organised by Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre in cooperation with the Illustration Section of the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU).


Awards include the Smrekar Award for Lifetime Achievement, award for best illustration, Smrekar plaques and special mentions for innovative approach and original drawing, as well as an award for the best young creator.

Awarded artists

The Smrekar Award for Lifetime Achievement has previously been bestowed to Marlenka Stupica, Ančka Gošnik Godec, Jelka Šubert Reichman, Marija Vogelnik, Milan Bizovičar, Marjanca Jemec Božič. In 2008 it went to Štefan Planinc and in 2010 to Melita Štih Vovk.

The Smrekar Award for best illustration has been awarded to Marija Lucija Stupica (2x), Dušan Muc, Rudi Skočir, Zvonko Čoh, Jelka Godec Schmidt, Alenka Sottler, and Kostja Gatnik in 2008.
