Starting as a group of young change-makers of different profiles (architects, urbanists, designers, a sociologist) in 2009, the Štajn Group was operating in the field of public space and small interventions, presenting possible futures for the town Kamnik, collaborating with a list of organisations, mostly Kotlovnica Youth Centre and ProstoRož.

In 2016, the group professionalised as Štajn Architects and now consists of the two leading members Sinan Mihelčič and Maruša Debevec; before that, Domen Stražar and Andraž Hrovat were also a part. Nevertheless, they still envision the role of an architect as a catalyst, bringing together different professions, the general public and authorities.

The House of Architecture Kamnik

An integral project of Štajn Architects is a place and a meeting point in town for inhabitants interested in architecture, design and landscape planning. It presents an open space for the exchange of opinions, a quest for information on the selected themes, for ideas and questions about the development of Kamnik. Lectures and round-table debates and exhibitions on the topic of architecture, sustainable development and the use of public space are organised occasionally.

Additionally, an Architectural Consultation Office has been set, offering advice to people who wish to renovate their home or work offices and surroundings. The service presents a brief consultation that might also lead to in-depth collaboration on an architectural level if wished and applicable.

Projects

The creative quarter Barutana represents the first steps to the revitalisation of the old factory Barutana, a former gunpowder factory, built in 1854. The initial idea by Rok Kosec from Kotlovnica Youth Centre together with Priden Možic Cultural Association which had previously organised events in some parts of the factory, was realised with Štajn for the Kamfest in 2020. The project idea for the opening event was to overcome the security wall so to establish a festival stage and artist exhibition inside the old building. Conceived as a prototype of how unused industrial buildings can become attractive, the action, accompanied by events and exhibitions, resulting in a decision of the Municipality of Kamnik to buy a part of the area in order to start renovating it. The project is among applicants for the Call for Ideas 2021 at the Future Architecture Platform by the Museum of Architecture and Design.

The project in the abandoned Alprem factory was presented in 2015, outlining ideas for a revitalisation of the space for recreational purposes, more precisely for the Kamnik skatepark and climbing association, which introduced its interest and first intervention already in 2013. During the greater City of Youth event, an architectural consultation and survey on how the local people perceive the renovation of the Alprem factory by Štajn Architects took place.

Background

The first steps were made in 2008 in Kamnik within the Kotlovnica Youth Centre as part of their youth programme. Soon after the group formed and presented their events and projects, mainly in frames of the local festival Kamfest. Since 2013, the Štajn Group has been developing and generating projects and events at several different parts of the town Kamnik, tackling the problem of unused spaces. The year 2014 brought a break-through with the development of the new architectural platform Cloud-architecture, enabling cooperation with high-end technology actors and local investors, and presenting their first project in the frames of the London Festival of Architecture. The global, interdisciplinary team of young professionals, working on urban and architectural projects all around the world, set their last project in San Francisco, California in 2016.
