[[Municipality of Slovenj Gradec]] covers a total area of 174 square kilometres and has a population of 16,689 people (2002) living in 22 settlements. Slovenj Gradec is the administrative and culture centre of the north-central part of the Koroška region.

Together with four other Slovene towns Slovenj Gradec is a partner city in the [[Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012]] project.

The Social Activities Department is responsible for social and health care, education and sports, as well as for public culture and cultural heritage preservation. The Slovenj Gradec Union of Cultural Societies and the local unit of the Public Fund for Cultural Activities facilitate activities of numerous cultural associations.

Slovenj Gradec is the only Slovene city to bear the name UN Messenger of Peace. Every year it marks United Nations Day with a series of events that turn the entire city into a showcase of peace under the title 'Let's Preserve Our Peace'. This event usually features exhibitions of paintings, photographs and literary works by children revolving around the theme of peace.

The Non-Economic Department is responsible also for support and supervision of cultural programmes in the municipality. The department is also in charge of cultural heritage preservation.
