The Cultural Activities Department is responsible for cultural activities, social and health care, education and sports. The Kočevje Union of Cultural Societies and the local unit of the Public Fund for Cultural Activities facilitate the activities of numerous cultural associations. In 2012 the Municipality of Kočevje bestowed the first Deklica s piščalko award for professional excellency in arts, humanities and culture.
Each year the Centre for Slovenian Literature organises a three-weeks residency of a foreign writer in Kočevje.
