Established in 1969, this UNESCO-affiliated organisation aims to facilitate relations between cultures and their literatures, chiefly in the fields of essay and literary critics: to foster cultural development in our contemporary world; and to enhance interactions between literatures through translations. To this end it organises congresses and colloquia which take place every year in a different country. IACL believes that the book remains the irreplaceable medium of culture and that the most important task today is to protect it. It publishes a biannual revue.
