Slovenian Polka and Waltz Festival, launched in 1995, is the most prestigious folk pop music festival. It is organized by by Radio-Television Slovenia (RTV Slovenia), which also takes care for live TV an radio transmissions. In contrast to other similar festivals, there are only 12 chosen bands appearing on stage, 6 for each category - polka and waltz. While the winning song in each category is chosen by expert jury, the award for the all-round best song is given award by the audience by way of televoting.

Besides the prestige, the winners also get to shoot a video for their songs. Up until 2012, the Discography Unit of RTV Slovenia was also releasing a compilation album featuring the presented songs.
