The [[Slovene Writers’ Association]] and the [[Sodobnost International Cultural Society]] publishing house decided to introduce an award for short stories because this literary genre had not previously been recognised by a national award. In 2005 the Award (€ 1,000) was conferred for the first time at the [[Slovene Book Days]] on Janez Kajzer and his Zaznamek za dosje (File Note). The jury selected the winner among 205 entries.

The Best Short Story Award was introduced by the Slovene Writers’ Association and the Sodobnost International Cultural Society because this literary genre had not previously been recognised by a national award.
