Established in 1999, the Centre for Slovene Literature is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to literary and publishing activities, primarily the international promotion of Slovene literature. The Centre supplies information on contemporary Slovene literature to its foreign partners and stimulates translations of Slovene authors into foreign languages. It organises translators’ visits to literary events and residencies, supplying them with books and literary magazines. The readings of Slovene poets (Alja Adam, Gašper Malej, Meta Kušar, Gregor Podlogar, Aleš Mustar, Draga Rinkema) organised by Centre for Slovenian Literature
The Centre for Slovene Literature publishes the Aleph book series, which includes new Slovene literary works as well as translations of contemporary world literature. Over 90 titles have been published in the series, some bilingual. In the last few years the Centre has supported various anthologies of Slovene literature and organised numerous international literary tours, visiting the Centre International de Poesie, Marseilles; the Circulo de Bellas Artes, Madrid; Le Theatre Poeme, Brussels; INALCO, Paris; the Centro Rómulo Gallegos, Caracas; the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and the International Book Fair, Sao Paulo; the Casa de Fernardo Pessoa, Lisbon; and many other venues in Australia, Scandinavia, Poland, Macedonia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. In 2005 the Centre for Slovene Literature organised a complex presentation of Slovenia at BookWorld Prague 2005 with an accompanying catalogue.
Since the Centre’s primary task is to address an international audience, it organises many presentations in Europe and the Americas. It also informs the Slovene public about important international literary trends, authors and publishing events. It is open to collaboration with other local and international institutions and individuals working toward similar goals. The Centre for Slovene Literature is a member of Literature Across Frontiers (LAF).
Along with the Slovene Writers’ Association and the Slovene PEN Centre, the Centre co-administers Trubar Foundation funds for subsidising foreign publishers who wish to publish Slovene authors in their native languages:
