UNIMA is a non-governmental organisation affiliated to UNESCO which seeks to bring together people from around the world who contribute to the development of the art of puppetry with the objective of using this art in the pursuit of human values such as peace and mutual understanding between peoples regardless of race, political or religious convictions and differences in culture, in accordance with the respect for fundamental human rights as defined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 10 December 1948.

UNIMA’s principal aim is to promote contacts between puppeteers of different countries as a means of developing the theory and practice of the art of puppetry and to help preserve the living traditions of puppet theatre. UNIMA is currently present in 65 countries with National Centres and Representatives; it organises international congresses, conferences and other events, assists festivals and operates a number of commissions to advance particular aspects of the art of puppetry. An illustrated magazine is sent out each year to all members, reporting on theatrical activity throughout the world.
