Along with some 30 countries around the globe, Slovenia celebrates World Book Day every year on 23 April, which has been designated by UNESCO as a day of worldwide celebration of books and reading.

The Slovene Writers’ Association organised the first Slovene Book Days as a one-day event in 1996. Since 1998 it has taken the form of a five-day open-air book fair, involving more than 40 publishers which as a condition of participation are obliged to offer a minimum 10 per cent discount on their publications. Since 1997 Slovene Book Days has also taken place in other Slovene towns such as Maribor (organised jointly with MKC Maribor), Celje, Koper, Velenje, Piran, Izola, Kranj and Krško. The book fairs are accompanied by daily literary readings, book launches, concerts and performances, discussions and a rich cultural entertainment programme.

The 10th Slovene Book Days of 2005 opened in Ljubljana's Zvezda park with a ceremony at which the Best Short Story Award for that year was announced. One of the highlights was a guest appearance by authors from Valencia, Spain, where the idea for presenting books to friends as a gift was initiated.
