Museum is situated in old city townhall and its collection focuses on presentation how everyday life of inhabitants of Lower Celjska Region was influenced by turmoils of politic changes and wars in 20th century until present days. Museums permanent collection is called ''Life in Celje'', a reconstruction of the Celjska street as it looked in the inter-war period., featuring the diary of three generations living in Celje in the course of the 20th century. The objects on display are mostly from the late 19th and 20th centuries, but some date from the 18th century.

Introduction


Public museum where focus is on researching, protecting and exhibiting movable cultural heritage of town Celje and Lower Savinjska region from the beginning of the 20th century until present times.

History of the museum

  • 1951 a department for the History of the National Liberation War was established at Celje Municipal Museum.
  • 1963 this became an independent cultural institution. Museum moved into premises of former townhall of Celje (1830–1963) where is situated today.
  • 1979 the museum obtained additional premises
  • 1987-89 a permanent exhibition on the development of the town of Celje after the Second World War was set up.
  • 1991 the institution was renamed the Celje Museum of Contemporary History.
  • 1993 the museum opened its dentistry collection, donated to the museum by private collector Dr. Franc Štolf.
  • 1995 first slovenian Children Museum Herman's Den opened in the premises of the Celje Museum of Contemporary History.
  • 2000 the permanent exhibition Life in Celje opened.


Celje Museum of Contemporary History also administers the Josip Pelikan Photographic Studio, Celje, and the Stari Pisker Prison, Celje.
