Next to the most prestigious BIO Gold Medal, the awards of the Biennial of Industrial Design (BIO) include the BIO Quality Concept Award, the BIO Honourable Mentions, and the BIO Award for a Student Work. Selected by a prestigious international jury, the BIO Awards are presented at the opening ceremony, and represent a recognition of quality in design. All awarded works of the Biennial of Industrial Design are included in the international design collection of the Museum of Architecture and Design. The BIO awards have been given to 756 works from 27 countries since the first BIO was held.


To date more than hundred people from around 30 countries have sat on BIO juries, including Wim Crouwel, Giancarlo Iliprandi, Tomás Maldonado, Edvard Ravnikar, Alan Fletcher and Czeslawa Frejlich.

Recent prizewinners

The BIO 21 jury in 2008 consisted of Victor Margolin (USA), Vivian Cheng Wai Kwan (Hong Kong), Paulo Maldonado (Portugal), Iva Babaja (Croatia) and Johan Valcke (Belgium). The BIO 21 Gold Medal was bestowed to contemporary design of the Funicular Railway to Ljubljana Castle contributing to a dialogue between old and new. It was designed by Miha Kerin and Majda Kregar, Ambient (Slovenia) with the co-authors and produced by Garaventa AG with partners, Goldau, Switzerland for the Municipality of Ljubljana in 2006. The second BIO 21 Gold Medal was given to the mix of images and poetry with different printing techniques in the form of the Booklet for 40ish sheets of paper designed by Studio Cuculić (Croatia) for the Igepa Plana Papiri Ltd, Zagreb, Croatia, 2007.
