The main research topics are: Slovene music history and its identity; ethnomusicology; and the aesthetics and sociology of music. Within Slovenia regular co-operation has been established with the University of Maribor, the Education Board of Slovenia and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology.
With regard to foreign institutions, the Department co-operates with the institutes and departments of musicology in Croatia (University of Zagreb), Yugoslavia (University of Belgrade), Austria (University of Graz, University of Vienna), Germany (University of Tübingen, University of Freiburg), the Czech Republic (University of Brno) and the United Kingdom (Universities of Oxford, London, Nottingham and Loughborough), as well as on international projects such as RILM and RISM. Members of the Department have also organised a number of international congresses, conferences and other events.
