The Slovene Puppetry Biennial was launched in 2001 by the Puppetry Creators Institute (ULU) in place of the earlier puppetry festival Klemenčičevi dnevi. Featuring both both major puppetry institutions and small puppetry groups, it includes small- and large-scale performances aimed at an adult audience, several based on classic literary texts. An expert jury confers the Slovene Puppetry Biennial Prizes. The accompanying programme includes exhibitions of puppets, sketches, stage sets and photo documentation, plus some additional high-quality performances aimed at young audiences.

The first two Biennials took place at Maribor Puppet Theatre and featured about 15 performances, presenting various puppetry genres, techniques and aesthetics. Since 2005 the event has taken place at Koper Theatre. The 2007 Biennial (20-23 Sep) featured 16 shows (each involving one performance), a workshop by well-known puppeteer and dancer Duda Paiva and an exhibition of puppets created by Tomaž Kržišnik.
