Founded in 1990 by the director Matjaž Pograjc, Betontanc (Concrete Dance) is a versatile group which creates dance theatre performances, focusing on the physicality of the human body and meticulous dramaturgy. Already in 1991, Betontanc was awarded at the Borštnik Theatre Festival as the most perspective Slovene theatre group, while in 1997, Matjaž Pograjc received the Prešeren Foundation Award for his directions in Betontanc. Since 1999, the producer of Betontanc is the Ljubljana-based Bunker Institute.

Betontanc's first production, Pesniki brez žepov ('Poets without Pockets'), was performed in the cellar corridor of Poljanska Grammar School in Ljubljana. Their second show of 1991 was Romeo and Juliet at the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, which also won an award at the Borštnikovi dnevi Festival. Their third production, Za vsako besedo cekin ('For Every Word a Golden Coin'), was first performed in Budapest and won the Grand Prix de Bagnolet of 1992. In 1993 Betontanc prepared a new production, Who's Afraid of Betontanc, in Angiers, which later premiered as Tatovi mokrih robčkov ('The Wet Hanky Thieves') at the Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre. In 1995 Betontanc was praised for its new production Know Your Enemy! and in 1997 the production Na treh straneh neba ('On Three Sides of Heaven') was first performed at the Sarajevo Winter Festival. Skrivni seznam sončnih dni ('The Hidden List of Sunshine Days') was performed in 1999 at the Mladinsko Theatre and produced by Bunker Institute, who became Betontanc's main producer (eg Midnight Meat Flight, 2002). In 2002 Maison des rendez-vous was co-produced with the Centre Choreographique National de Rennes et de Bretagne and in 2004 Wrestling Dostoyevsky was premiered at Schauspielhaus Vienna. A politically-engaged performance of Everybody for Berlusconi in collaboration with the Jonghollandia group was premiered in the Netherlands in 2004. Since its inception, Betontanc has travelled extensively, to four continents and over 70 cities, among them Krakov, New York and Lisbon.
