Department of Musicology, University of Ljubljana
History
In 1962 a new Department of Musicology opened its doors at the Philosophical Faculty. Its first head and full professor became Dr. Dragotin Cvetko. His aspirations were fullfiled and musicology gained success on a university level. As a pioneer of musicology studies he wroe the extensive work History of Music in Slovenia. Along with the donation of renowed musicologist Bruno Nettl, Cvetko's donation of his bibliographic collecition on musicology is available in the Library.
Soon after, in 1965, the Department began to publish regulary the Muzikološki zbornik ('Musicological Annual'). It brings out the articles, scientific papers by Slovenian and international musicologists. The journal has an international advisory board, the papers are published in Slovenian and English. Today
After the initial efforts with founding the Department, the Slovenian history of music is considered to be a delepoved to the status of the noteworthy science. Along with the establishing the postgraduate and doctoral programmes, the Department is active in publishing the biannual Bulletin and the Varia musicologica collection.
Departmental teaching staff organise and implement various research projects in the fields of historical and systematic musicology. The main research topics are: Slovene music history and its identity; ethnomusicology; and the aesthetics and sociology of music. Within Slovenia regular co-operation has been established with the University of Maribor, the Education Board of Slovenia and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. When is comes to musical historiography the Department cooperates with the Institute of Musicology at Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU) and publishes journals, papers and organizes meetings, conferences and lectures.
With regard to international cooperations, the Department co-operates with the institutes and departments of musicology in Croatia (University of Zagreb), Serbia (University of Belgrade), Austria (University of Graz, University of Vienna), Germany (University of Tübingen, University of Freiburg, University of Leipzig, University of Regensburg, Humboldt University), the Czech Republic (University of Brno, Masaryk University) and the United Kingdom (Universities of Oxford, London, Nottingham and Loughborough), as well as on other international projects. Members of the Department have also organised a number of international congresses, conferences and other events.
